Personal & Family
Your personal and family medical history provides insight into diseases and conditions that might affect your own health and that of family members. Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, breast and prostate cancer, and depression can sometimes have hereditary factors.
Your own medical history can reflect environmental and behavioural issues and inherited genetic susceptibility.
A comprehensive health assessment is vitally important and is used as a tool for disease prevention and health promotion. A thorough medical examination can identify specific health problems. By identifying risk factors relating to certain diseases and illnesses at an early stage, a doctor can provide early treatment or intervention to minimise any adverse health impact and maximise productivity and enjoyment of life.
At the Bourke Street Clinic the personal / family health assessment will take approx 45 minutes and includes:
- Full review of medical history
- Comprehensive medical examination to include a review of physiological systems (circulatory, respiratory, musculo-skeletal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, nervous, renal & skin)
- Prostate examination for males
- Breast examination & pap smear for females
- Visual & hearing testing
- Resting ECG
- Full biochemistry screen, glucose, renal function, liver function
- Full lipid screen (cholesterol, HDL/LDL, triglycerides)

Doll and Peto in 1966 published a study that suggested that 35% of all cancers are associated with poor nutrition. In October 2004 in a review article Michael Donaldson stated that 30% to 40% of all cancers can be prevented by dietary and lifestyle measures alone. The “free radical” theory of disease and ageing reinforces their findings.
